Sustainability
We are committed to sustainability in every aspect of our business, and strive to use environmentally-friendly materials wherever possible. Our mailers are an excellent example of this commitment. Not only are they eco-friendly, but they also add to the aesthetic appeal of our products. Our mailers are used for all 12oz boxes, 5lb bags and most merchandise.
Our mailers are made from a variety of renewable plant-based materials and bio-polymers, and are certified home compostable. They have an average breakdown time of 180 days or 90 days in commercial composting conditions. By using these mailers, we are also supporting the Eco-Packaging Alliance, which helps to promote global reforestation and eco-friendly packaging practices. Every order we place contributes to planting trees in areas of need.
We believe that sustainability, quality, and design go hand-in-hand, and strive to create excellence in all aspects of our business. Our goal is to combine the world's best coffees with innovative sustainability practices. We are proud to share our initiatives and carefully considered decisions in our pursuit of this goal. Boxes:
To ensure sustainability, we use unbleached, uncoated paperboard for our 12oz boxes. These boxes are moisture-resistant, low-density, high-yield, and require less fiber while still providing durability and strength. Additionally, they are certified as food-grade and can be easily recycled. We prioritize excellent design and feel, and chose these materials to create an innovative and sustainable product.
Our boxes are sourced from a company that collects, processes, and repurposes recyclable materials to create new boxes. These boxes are overlaid with laminate, which is a non-toxic, polypropylene composite that can be recycled using conventional paper recycling methods.
Bags:
To prioritize sustainability our bags are made of 60% compostable and renewable film layers, providing both structure and environmental responsibility. Madis product packaging actively upholds the integrity of our products while also being beautiful and aesthetically pleasing. These bags also feature a one-way gas valve to promote longer-lasting shelf stability and freshness.
Unlike most packaging that uses non-renewable plastic and foil, we adds an additional layer of eco-friendly initiative to our packaging. Our consumers can enjoy their favorite coffee without worrying about the environmental impact it may leave behind.
Roasting :
We are excited to share that our Roastery has achieved carbon neutrality. In early 2023, we installed solar panels on the roof of our HQ, allowing the entire production area and roastery to operate solely on solar power. Roasting and production require a substantial amount of energy, and by taking these processes off the grid, we have made significant progress in reducing our carbon footprint.
Furthermore, we use Ghibli-15s for our roasting, which consume far less energy than typical small-batch and production roasters. With infrared gas burners, we can roast using conductive, convective, and radiant heat instead of traditional large gas burners, leading to an estimated 60% reduction in natural gas consumption.
Producers:
At our company, we are committed to supporting sustainable coffee production practices at the producer level. Although measuring the sustainability of our producing partners can be challenging given the varying practices between countries, we strongly believe that sustainability and quality go hand in hand. We take various steps to ensure this. One way we support sustainability is by paying premiums that producers use to invest in initiatives like building drying beds and purchasing organic fertilizers. For many producers, sustainability is crucial for the long-term success of their families and communities. Another way we promote sustainability is by purchasing natural and honey processed coffees, which yield less acidic runoff and require less water for processing. These methods also help protect ground water integrity. Our coffee lineup regularly features coffees that utilize these methods. In addition, our practices reinforces our commitment to working with producers who consistently produce high-quality coffees and who actively pursue sustainable farming practices for long-term financial and agricultural stability. We understand that coffee production is a long game, and sustainable practices on the farm level are essential for achieving this goal.
